A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Prabhakar Basavaprabhu Kore, Chairman of the KLE Society and Chancellor of KLE Academy of Higher Education & Research (KAHER), for his invaluable support during this pivotal inauguration.

The chapter also hosted the Third International SharaNa SamskRuti Sammelana in 2008, where a key highlight was the release of the book titled “108 Vachanas of BasavEshwara,” compiled by Smt Usha Palakshappa, Advisor and long-standing member of the New Zealand Chapter, featuring explanations in various Indian languages.

About the New Zealand Chapter

Established in 2001, the New Zealand Chapter of BSAPAC was inaugurated by Poojya Shri Mallikarjun Devru of Sarpabhooshan Math, Bengaluru, alongside other senior leaders from Sydney during the Basava Jayanthi celebrations. The chapter was officially registered as an Incorporated Society with the Companies Office of the New Zealand Government in 2002.

Previously known as the Basava Samiti of Australasia Inc, this chapter was inaugurated by Shri Mallikarjuna Devaru of Sarpabhushan Mutt, Bangalore, in May 2001. The foundation of Sharana philosophy in New Zealand was solidified by Dr Shivamurthy Murugharajendra Mahaswamiji (Murugha Sharanaru) in April 2002

In 2015, during the Basava Jayanthi celebrations, the New Zealand Chapter released the first production of Vachanas, titled “JagajyOti,” composed by the late Smt Ratna Vaamanamurthy. This collection, addressed by Poojya Shri Prabhu Channabasava Swamiji from Motagi Math, Atnah, showcases a variety of vachanas on a compact disc.

In 2021, the Basava Samiti of Australasia New Zealand Chapter Inc officially joined under the BSAPAC umbrella, now recognised as the Basava Samiti of Asia Pacific (New Zealand Chapter) Inc. This chapter operates as an international charity registered under the ACNC, with a legally established NZBN number, ensuring secure and collaborative operations.

Key Events

The New Zealand Chapter is known for its vibrant engagement with the community through various events, including:

  • Maneyalli Mahamane: The New Zealand Chapter is renowned for its “Maneyalli Mahamane” events, held on the second Saturday of every month. These gatherings feature exclusive audio files developed to facilitate the Sahaja Shivayoga programme, introduced by Poojya Shri Dr. Shivamurthy Murughasharanaru from MurughAmath, Chitradurga. Children participate with enthusiasm, fostering artistic expression and greater engagement from community members.
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, many events transitioned to virtual meetings, where special guests and subject matter experts were invited to enrich the discussions. This adaptation enabled us to organise numerous virtual seminars on diverse topics.
  • Vachana Teaching: The Mahamane events have provided a platform for discussing the broader meanings of Vachanas. Both children and adults have explored these teachings through reading, singing, and engaging discussions, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of Vachanas.
  • Vachanotsava: Each year, the Vachanotsava celebrates Vachana competitions, recitations, and showcases during Diwali. This annual event highlights Vachanas intertwined with classical music, allowing attendees to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the teachings.
  • At the 13 November 2022 Mahamane, we had the honour of hosting Pandit Dr. Mrithunjaya G. Shettar as a special guest, further enriching our discussions and community engagement.
